Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What is the Sacramento Area Sewer District?

The Sacramento Area Sewer District is a sewer utility that owns and operates thousands of miles of lower lateral and main line pipes and is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of those sewer pipes. Once collected in our system, sewage flows into the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District interceptor system, where it is conveyed to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant near Elk Grove.

The District was formed in 1978, and is governed by a 10-member Board of Directors representing the various city and county jurisdictions in our service area, including the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, the cities of Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, and Elk Grove, as well as portions of the cities of Folsom and Sacramento.

What areas does the District serve, and how many customers does the service area include? The Sacramento Area Sewer District provides sewer collection service to more than 1 million people in the Sacramento region, including the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, the cities of Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, and Elk Grove, as well as portions of the cities of Folsom and Sacramento. We serve residential, commercial and industrial customers.

What should I do if sewage backs up into my home?

Call us first at 916-875-6730! As a District customer, you pay a monthly utility fee for sewer service. Let us try to help you first when you have a sewer problem. We will check our portion of the sewer line for problems.

What is the difference between SASD and SRCSD?

The Sacramento Area Sewer District serves as one contributing agency to the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD). While we are responsible for the collection of wastewater from the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, the cities of Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, and Elk Grove, and portions of the cities of Folsom and Sacramento, SRCSD is responsible for the conveyance and treatment of that wastewater. For SRCSD, this includes the ownership and maintenance of larger, interceptor pipelines and the activities taking place at the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, located just outside of Elk Grove, CA.

To learn more about how the Sacramento Area Sewer District works with SRCSD, explore A Guide to the Sacramento Region's Sewer Services.

How can I get more information about the wastewater treatment plant?

Who sits on SASD's Board of Directors, and when are the meetings?

Can I really call SASD 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year?

Easement Access & Customer Responsibility Questions

What are my responsibilities regarding utility easements on my property?

You, as a property owner, must guarantee access to any easements located on your property. If you are unsure whether or not your property has an easement, refer to your property deed or call us at 876-6100. Please refer to the District's Easement Access Policy (link) for more information.

How will sewer line repairs impact my home or neighborhood?

We always work with our customers to minimize the impact of repairs. If the problem is located in the backyard, we must gain access and do all excavating by hand, a slower process than with equipment. Therefore, repairs could take days instead of hours. Please reference our Easement Access Policy for more information about backyard access. If the repair is located in the street, inconveniences could include short-term road closures or interruptions in service.

How can I identify a sewer worker?

All of our workers carry photo identification. Additionally, all field staff - except supervisors - wear our standard blue uniforms with their names and the District's logo.

Employment Questions
