Central Trunk Sewer Rehabilitation Project: Background

Information Hotline number: (916) 480-3793

The Central Trunk is a critical portion of the southeastern Sacramento sewer system. Constructed in the 1960s, the eight mile system conveys both residential and industrial sewage from the middle of Sacramento County, south of the American River, to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (SWRTP), near Elk Grove.

The District has long been conducting regular sewer maintenance and repairs to the Central Trunk sewer system. Increasing corrosion found in the Central Trunk sewer pipelines has made it necessary to line eight miles of pipelines with a process called cured-in-place pipe (CIPP).

Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) is a liner that provides a seamless corrosion resistant, jointless "pipe-within-a-pipe".

The District has carefully tracked the condition of the Central Trunk sewer pipelines since it was put into service. When advanced corrosion was discovered in the investigative studies, the Central Trunk sewer system was intermittently sprayed with a special type of pipeline coating, in addition to other corrosion reduction methods. Based on the most recent observations, more aggressive measures are needed to restore the sewer pipelines.

Saturating a 60" diameter liner tube with resin (referred to as wet-out) in the field.

Temporary walls made of plywood and lined with insulation. This measure may be used to mitigate noise complaints.
