Courtland Project
The rural community of Courtland is located in south Sacramento County. The community has its own wastewater treatment plant owned by the Sacramento Area Sewer District (SASD). Because this outdated treatment plant has not been able to keep up with increasingly stringent new rules governing operations, significant changes are being made to how the wastewaterwill be managed in Courtland.
Consequently, the Courtland Sewer Project is being constructed to improve the community's sewer facilities and meet the strict wastewater treatment requirements imposed by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board.
The project includes the construction of two new pump stations and the installation of approximately ten miles of sewer force main pipeline to connect to existing SASD sewer facilities and deliver community wastewater to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (SRWTP) in Elk Grove.
New Plans for Wastewater Treatment
To comply with regulatory requirements, SASD first completed a comprehensive study to identify the best long-term plan for improving the wastewater treatment process for Courtland.
Of the alternatives considered, the plan to pipe the community's sewage to SRWTP proved to be most cost effective and environmentally feasible. This plan has included:
- Constructing 2 new pump stations; 1 on Wilson Road; and 1 on Lambert Road
- Building ten miles of pipeline to deliver the community's wastewater to existing SASD sewage facilities
The new pump stations will convey the wastewater through pressurized pipelines, called "force mains," to a pump station at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center (RCCC) on Bruceville Road. From there, the wastewater will be sent to SRWTP.
