Double-Wye Replacement Project

An example of two homes connected to the same service line with a double-wye connection.
SASD has implemented a comprehensive sewer rehabilitation program to address its aging infrastructure. One focus of this program is to eliminate an older type of service connection known as the "double wye." Approximately 7,500 double wye services have been identified in the District's system, and each of those services will be replaced with separate sewer service connections by this program over the next four years.
In the past, SASD has incurred substantial costs for the cleanup of flooded structures caused by double wye stoppages. These replacements will help keep the community's vital sanitary sewer system working smoothly.
Overview:
A double wye occurs when two homes share one sewer service connection to the main sewer line (see diagram 1). Prior to 1971, installation of double wye services was an acceptable standard. One unfortunate result of this sewer system is that if the shared sewer pipeline becomes plugged, sewage can back up and flood either house. This has occurred in many neighborhoods and SASD wants to prevent this from happening in the future. This project separates each double wye service connection and reconnects each residence with its own pipe to the main sewer line in the street or easement (see diagram 2).

Access, Work & Safety:
An important element to this project has been to get permission from the owner and/or resident to enter across the property line. "Right-of-Entry" cards have already been collected from affected properties. The work crew will contact affected property owners/residents 48 hours prior to any work at a home with a door hanger.
Our goal is to rehabilitate SASD sewers quickly, safely and with as little disruption to you and your property as possible. There may be instances where it will be necessary for crews to completely close residential streets in order to complete the work. If this type of road closure is anticipated in your neighborhood, you will be notified in advance to move vehicles outside the construction zone prior to work beginning. Emergency access to all homes will be maintained.
We encourage parents to talk to their children about the dangers of playing near construction zones and why they should stay away from all construction areas and equipment.
