Walnut Grove Project

The community of Walnut Grove is located in south Sacramento County on the banks of the Sacramento River. The community has its own wastewater treatment plant owned and operated by Sacramento Area Sewer District (SASD). Because this outdated treatment plant, like others of its kind, has not been able to keep up with increasingly stringent rules governing their operations, significant changes must be made to the way wastewater is currently managed in Walnut Grove.

Consequently, the Walnut Grove Sewer Project is being planned to improve the community's sewer facilities and meet the strict wastewater treatment requirements imposed by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board.

The project includes the construction of two new pump stations, one at the existing treatment plant and one on Cameron Road, along with the installation of force main pipelines that will connect to existing SASD sewer facilities and deliver community wastewater to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (SRWTP) in Elk Grove (see map).

New Plans for Wastewater Treatment

To comply with regulatory requirements, SASD first completed a comprehensive study to identify the best long-term plan for improving the wastewater treatment process for Walnut Grove.

Of several alternatives considered, the plan to pipe the community's wastewater to SRWTP proved to be most constructible, environmentally feasible, and cost effective. This plan involves:

  • Constructing a new pump station at the existing Walnut Grove treatment plant
  • Constructing a new pump station along Cameron Road in Thornton
  • Building a total of ten miles of pipeline to deliver the community's wastewater to existing SASD sewage facilities

The new pump stations will convey wastewater through pressurized pipelines, called "force mains," to an existing pump station at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center (RCCC) on Bruceville Road. From there, the wastewater will be sent to SRWTP for treatment.
