Controlling Pollutants
Medication and Sharps
Flushing unused or expired medications down the sink or toilet can pollute the environment. To prevent misuse and keep medications from entering our waterways, please dispose of unused prescription and over-the-counter medications responsibly.
PFAS
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly referred to as PFAS, have been detected in some water resources throughout the country, especially in groundwater drinking wells near airports, military bases, and manufacturing sites.
Mercury
Be Mercury Free is a program that aims to protect you, your family, and the environment by reducing mercury pollution in the Sacramento River watershed. By learning how you can prevent mercury contamination, you’ll help keep our waterways safe and clean!
Pesticides
Improper disposal or use of toxic pesticides can threaten the aquatic environment and river, our treatment plant permit compliance, and water reuse.
Salinity
Elevated salinity (dissolved mineral salts) in surface waters such as rivers and lakes and in groundwater is an increasing problem affecting the Central Valley. While some salt is beneficial, too much salt can degrade water quality, jeopardize agricultural production and increase the cost of our water supplies.
