Harvest Water to Receive Additional WSIP Funding
Sacramento, Calif. — The California Water Commission recently announced that Regional San will receive about $4.3 million in additional Proposition 1 grant funding from California’s Water Storage Investment Program (WSIP). These funds will help finance Regional San’s Harvest Water Program. This additional funding adds to the previous $287.5 million in WSIP funding, for an overall total award of about $292 million.
Harvest Water was established to meet Regional San’s goal of increasing the use of recycled water by providing tertiary-treated wastewater for farmers—demonstrating Regional San’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.
Harvest Water represents one of the largest agricultural water reuse projects in the United States. Once complete, it will provide up to 50,000 acre-feet per year of drought-resistant recycled water to irrigate up to 16,000 acres of permanent agriculture and habitat conservation lands near the Cosumnes River and Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Sacramento County.
“Regional San takes its commitment to environmental stewardship very seriously,” said Christoph Dobson, Regional San’s General Manager. “Securing these funds helps our efforts to provide a safe and sustainable water supply for agriculture, irrigation and habitat protection. It also reduces the need for groundwater pumping, a critical need in today’s drought conditions.”
Next steps include continued planning efforts with local farmers and development of designs for pumping, transmission and distribution systems to convey recycled water from the wastewater treatment plant near Elk Grove to farmers in southern Sacramento County. The first phase of the recycled water delivery system is expected to be operational by 2025.
